Seeking Volunteer Facilitators

Description: Ele’s Place, a healing center for grieving children, is seeking caring adults to volunteer as facilitators with its children’s bereavement support groups. People of diverse ethnicities, males, and bilingual individuals are particularly encouraged to apply; however, any interested adult is welcome to submit a volunteer application for this rewarding opportunity. To qualify to become an Ele’s Place support group facilitator, individuals are required to complete a 20-hour training program and make a one-year commitment to work with their assigned group. The next training program begins in early September. Volunteer applications should be submitted by August 18 to be considered for participation in this upcoming training. HNC Walking Club

My Cub and I will run from 10:30 to 11:30 am or 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The evening session has been added to accommodate families working during the day. In these programs the naturalist will facilitate activities while the child and adult companion participate as a team. Halloween Adventures

Description: Children will squeal with delight as they enter the Halloween Fun House, a Halloween thrill without blood or gore. They will continue their adventure with crafts inside the building and games outside. Again this year, they can take a swing at a real pumpkin pińata and collect candy when it finally breaks. Children accompanied by an adult can follow a trail for a short walk through the “Friendly Forest” participating in activities and meeting a “spider” and “bat” along the way to the pumpkin patch where they will be allowed to choose a pumpkin and take it back to the building to decorate. Additionally, in the main display area of the nature building visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and to learn about misunderstood animals, such as snakes, spiders, bats and wolves. Live animals, on loan from Preuss Pets will be available for viewing. Children can also take a hayride with a naturalist through the park, during which they can play a trivia game. In addition, there will be a campfire going for roasting marshmallows. Children can participate in all of these activities for just $5. Visitors who are just interested in the “misunderstood animals” area are encouraged to attend and enjoy refreshments as well. HNC Walking Club

Description: Walk your way to strong bones, toned muscles and a healthy heart! The Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road has organized a Walking Club that meets once a month at a different park for a guided walk. The fee for one year in this club includes all Walking Club guided walks as well as any other guided walk at the Harris Nature Center and is $30 for adults and $10 for children. Drop-in walkers are welcome for $3/person/walk. The next scheduled walk is Saturday December 4 at 9 am at Hillbrook Park, 1747 Lake Lansing Road in Haslett. Chipmunk Story Time

Description: Join Chicory Chipmunk at the Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, in Meridian Township once a month for nature stories followed by games or a walk. The programs are open to preschool and elementary children. The next story time, “Welcome Winter” is Thursday December 16 at 10 am, followed by story times on January 20, February 17 and March 17. Bea's Love Closet

Description: Bea's Love Closet is open the third Saturday of every month to assist residents of Jackson County with clothing. We have clothing in all sizes, from newborn to extended sizes, for boys, girls, men, and women. Anyone coming to Bea's Love Closet during our regular operating hours will be able to choose up to five outfits, one pair of shoes, and one jacket for free. This clothing has been donated by members of the community. We ask only that you bring in every member of the family in need of clothing to pick put their own outfits.
